When she'd arrived in this city, Isabelle hadn't expected that things would go the way they have. She's always had Alec, but she never expected that she would end up with a sort of makeshift family, including a mundane. A year ago she would have scoffed, but now Isabelle's not sure what she would do without them.
She gets Spencer's text mid-morning, asking her for coffee and that he has some kind of news. News, it seems, is far from in short supply at the moment. Isabelle has already had her plate full with the mess between Alec and Magnus, and her own relationship with Billy, but she's curious as to what Spencer could have to say. For a moment she considers if it's anything to do with Luke's full moon adventure the other night, but Isabelle is pleased that they'd wrapped that up considerably neatly.
Spencer is family so Isabelle doesn't bother to dress up too fancy, though she does slip into tight jeans and a bright top before she leaves. The coffee shop isn't far from her apartment so she figures she'll walk, enjoying the sun on her face. She sends Reid a quick text to let him know that she's on her way, and it only takes her about ten minutes to reach the place they'd agreed on.
It doesn't look like he's arrived yet, so Isabelle finds a corner table and orders two coffees, anticipating that he won't be far behind her.

The morning had been relatively quiet, aside from Reid occasional reassuring Luke that nobody had gotten hurt from what had happened the night of the full moon, that he shouldn't let this be a weight on his shoulders, but that's easier said than done. Luke isn't going to let this go easily, Reid knows that. As much as he'd like to do something about it, though, it seems more prudent to give Luke just a little bit of space for now. Derek is supposed to be coming to the store to help sort out what'd happened with the locking mechanism to the basement and how to improve it so what had happened last night never happens again so it seems like the perfect opportunity to excuse himself from the apartment for a bit.
The first person he texts is Isabelle. He doesn't know why she's the first name that pops into his head, not that he doesn't care to see her because he does; but Reid thinks he just needs to be around someone he trusts, someone he considers important to him and frankly, someone he can talk to about all that's been on his mind. Alec and Magnus could have been options, of course, but they have enough to worry about on their own. T.J. is a newlywed, he's likely still riding that wedding high, and Reid does need to tell them all about the engagement but right now, the plan is to tell Isabelle.
She'll be the first to know, at least of those closest to them, and Reid can't help but smile to himself as he walks into the coffee shop and scans the room until he spots her in a corner.
"Hi," he says, slipping into the seat beside her and giving her a grateful look for the coffee. "You're a step ahead, thank you. For the coffee, for meeting me here. I just... I needed to be around a friendly face after what happened with Luke."

Isabelle takes a sip of her coffee, pushing his across the table towards him. "Any time," she says, and she means it, which she wouldn't for just anyone. There's a select group of people that Isabelle will gladly give up her time for without question, but even after almost almost nine months in Darrow the list is still relatively small. "Is he doing okay?"
Physically, she knows Luke is fine. They'd done their best to restrain him without hurting him, and the werewolf in him means he heals quickly. She's more concerned about his head-space. Isabelle doesn't know a lot of Downworlders who would feel guilty for going rogue but she knows Luke is one of them. He hadn't hurt anyone, which is a relief, but she knows he'll be beating himself up about it anyway.
For a brief moment she wonders what would have happened if something had happened, and it worries her. Not just for the fact that an innocent person could have been hurt, not just for how Luke would have taken the news, but about what her responsibilities would be. Isabelle swore an oath to protect mundanes against demons and rogue Downworlders, but she'd never entertained the thought that one day that could be her friend, her family. It's not a road she wants to go down, so she shoves the thought away and paints a smile back on her face.

They've had that conversation already, and Luke had heard him but Reid doesn't think it's sunk in yet. That's okay, this is something that's going to take a little time and rightfully so. People could've gotten hurt, it really could've been much worse than it'd turned out, and that's not something that can be ignored. Whatever the fluke had been with the locks and doors that night, they'll have to make damn sure it never happens again.
"He's okay," Reid answers softly, knowing he doesn't sound all too convincing, but he does offer up a reassuring smile. "He's still shaken up about it, about what could have happened, but he'll be fine in his own time. I think the next full moon will come with a lot of anxiety for him, but... that's what we're here for, isn't it? We're his family, we'll make sure he gets through it."

"I could be there," she suggests, shrugging one shoulder, "if you wanted." She knows the offer will probably get turned down but at least they'll know she's around if she's needed. This kind of thing is her job, and if Luke would feel any degree of comfort having her stand guard, then she's happy to do it.
"Either way, I'm only a call away."

Even if Luke doesn't know Isabelle is there once he's changed, Reid knows his fiance might feel better knowing there's someone there to make sure the wolf is contained. Luke had told him how sick it'd made him to think the wolf could have gone straight upstairs rather than out the store window, and Reid understands that could have been a possibility but he prefers not to dwell on what hadn't happened. He's safe, they all are, that's what matters now.
"Sometimes it's nice to have someone around on the full moon," Reid admits, shrugging sheepishly. "It's funny, on the nights I didn't have to work and actually got to sleep in my apartment, I was always alone and it didn't bother me. Now, it's one night a month and it's impossible to ignore the empty space on the other side of the bed."
He clears his throat, flushing a little at having confessed something he wouldn't be prone to saying to anyone but... well, Luke, and Reid flashes a smile. "Anyway, I did call you for a reason. Luke and I, we have some news and with everything that's been going on lately, it never really felt like the right time to say anything about it. I need to tell someone, though, someone who isn't a stranger, anyway. I just need you to promise me you'll keep it under wraps for a little while."

Spencer continues and Isabelle cocks her head to the side, curious. It's not like the two of them to be secretive about anything really, and she's more confused about the fact that she's apparently the first one being told whatever this is. It's not that Isabelle doesn't think they care for her, but she's aware that she hasn't built the same kind of bond as Alec has. She's used to that though, used to holding people at an arm's distance even when she cares about them a lot. Regardless, it means a lot to her that she was asked out for coffee, let alone to be told some apparent secret.
"My lips are sealed," she says, miming a locking motion over her lips. "I could draw a silencing rune but that seems extreme." She flashes him a smile. Isabelle is good with secrets anyway, has been good at them as long as she can remember. She'd kept her father's secret, her brother's, and now she can keep Spencer's, too. "What's going on?"

Shifting in his chair, his hands having found a napkin he's now shredding into bit, Reid can't help but laugh as he rolls his eyes at himself. "I don't know why I'm nervous about this, it doesn't make sense, so I'm just going to say it. Luke and I are getting married. I asked him last month, on his birthday, and... well, obviously he said yes."
It's like a weight being lifted off his shoulders. Keeping their engagement a secret hasn't been a chore, but he's wanted to tell at least their closest friends for weeks now. He'd taken to talking about it to random strangers instead, which somehow hadn't been quite as satisfying.

All of that goes out the window when he speaks, and Isabelle has to clap her hand over her mouth to keep from squealing. It's probably undignified and not at all Shadowhunter-like and her mother would chastise her if she were here, but Isabelle can't help herself. Beaming wide, she jumps out of her chair to throw her arms around his neck, squeezing him in a hug.
"You did? That's wonderful, that's so, so great! Obviously he said yes," she gushes, feeling like an excited schoolgirl and refusing to care. Her adopted family is becoming more like a family by the minute, and Isabelle couldn't be happier. Her own parents had never been like this, never been so hopelessly in love, and it's nice to have reassurance again that it's real, and can happen.
Sitting back in her own chair, Isabelle bites her lip and tries to force herself to be calmer. "I'm so happy for you, Spencer, I can't wait."

Isabelle is family, though, her happiness for them is unmistakably real, and Reid has to swallow down the lump forming in his throat just to get a few words out.
"Thank you," he says, outright beaming now. "I just really needed to tell someone close to us, it's been hard keeping it to ourselves. I mean, it's also been kind of nice, giving ourselves the change to enjoy it privately for a little while. We've already done a few things, cake tasting and talking about venues, things like that, but..." Reid shrugs a shoulder. "It's getting close to being the time to let the cat out of the bag to everyone."
no subject
"That's wonderful! You have to let me dress you, I promise I'm good at it." Isabelle is still finding her feet, learning everything she can from Kate to try and focus on this new career path, but she loves it. She dresses people by day and fights demons by night; it's all Isabelle could have ever hoped for.
"Sorry," she says afterwards, lowering her tone a little, "about before. I hugged without thinking, I didn't mean to."

This isn't the conversation he'd ended on having after revealing that he's going to be married but nevertheless, here they are. It's to his good fortune Isabelle had brought up the subject of dressing him because that does seem like the best out right now.
"Anyway, yes, I'd actually really love it if you'd help me pick out something to wear to the wedding. Besides, it'd give me a reason to come visit you at the store and see you in action. I'll treat you to lunch afterwards, too, I promise."
no subject
"Of course, I'd love to." Isabelle has never gotten to dress anybody for a wedding before, and she's excited. She's happy just to attend the wedding at all (at least, she hopes, assumes she's invited) but having something extra special to do, to be involved, makes her happy.
"Just don't bring Luke," she instructs, shaking her head firmly. "Bad luck and all that."

It's not a sweet story but then, a lot of traditions aren't rooted in what would be considered very pleasant. Still, he smiles brightly because it's not like Isabelle had asked to learn that today, and he shrugs a shoulder. "But I'll leave him home anyway. I do like the idea of keeping what we wear a surprise from each other."
He shifts in his seat then, drumming his fingers against his cup. "So, um, how are things with you and Billy?" Reid's not particularly skilled at asking much about Alec or Isabelle's respective romantic relationships, but he does care. He does want to know if she's happy because she so very much deserves to be. "Do you think you'd bring him to your wedding? You're allowed the plus-one, by the way, just to be clear."
no subject
"The surprise is the best part," she says excitedly. It's not her wedding but she's already excited to see the look on Luke's face when he sees Spencer. She knows she has good taste, and she's determined to make him look good enough that even Luke falters a little.
She hadn't expected him to ask about Billy, and she's a little surprised. She hasn't really mentioned it too much to Spencer or Luke, but she supposes they've all had bigger things on their mind. The first time Luke had seen her with Billy had been when he was changing back after getting loose, and she's not sure that counts as a good first impression. "Things are good," she says. Things are good, nice and sweet and easy in a way that they never had been back home. Isabelle has always been cautious about relationships and she has no intention of letting herself fall head over heels after only a few months. But it has been longer than anything she'd gotten involved in back home, and she likes it a whole lot more.
"Would that be okay?" she asks. She hadn't thought about asking Billy at first, but now she thinks that's something she would like to do.
no subject
"Of course it's okay," Reid tells her, brows lifting in surprise. "I mean, he helped with what happened with Luke, which was really wonderful of him, but... but he's also your boyfriend, if bringing him will make you happy, of course we'd want you do it. On the other side of things, if he happens to do anything between now and then to upset you, I can throw him in jail for a few hours on a bogus charge. I'd offer to punch him for you, but I'm not sure he wouldn't press charges against me."
At least with Magnus, Reid had known he would've been able to get away with it.
